Summary details of module content:
This is a counselling skills module which provides an understanding of counselling models, process and skills practice within the context of helping and supportive relationships with clients. Emphasis is on the practitioner operating within a professional code of ethics and practice. The core approach is Gerard Egan’s ‘The Skilled Helper’ integrated with Rogers’ core therapeutic conditions. Self-awareness and development, critical reflection and supervision are emphasised throughout the module.

Assessment strategy:
Assessment is knowledge based (Reflective Essay – 3000 words) and skills based (5 – Day Residential Counselling Skills Component).

Duration
This is a two semester module with a 5-Day Residential School in the second semester. Can be studied on Blackboard (Virtual Learning System), or by Distance learning.

The module is a SHE Level 3 module / SCQF Level 9 and is worth 30 credits. Academic accreditation of the module may be used towards the award of the GCU BSc/BSc (Hons.) Professional Development** (including top-up for Diplomates) or for existing graduates as part of a graduate certificate or graduate diploma.
