Certificate in Counselling

This introduction to Counselling single module course leads to the award of the College's Certificate in counselling. It serves also as the foundation module of our Diploma courses. This means that students who initially want to undertake only this single module may afterwards build up their studies to the level of our Diploma courses; ie courses 1500, 2500 or 4000 (Dip Coun), without repetition.

The course is designed to provide a comprehensive and practical understanding of basic counselling skills. It teaches the person-centred approach to counselling and offers the student a clinical and pastoral perspective on client care. The course uses Egan's 3 Stage Model to help identify counselling skills and qualities throughout the counselling process. These three stages are: Explore-Understand-Act.

To accompany and enhance the course we include 2 video CD-ROMs and 1 Audio CD-ROM. These ensure that as you begin your study of counselling you will gain a unique insight into how professional counsellors use the same skills and techniques while you listen and watch actual counselling sessions.

The ten lessons include illustrations and short practical exercises which will help you to become familiar with your newly learned skills. Five of the ten lessons conclude with a case study assignment. Your responses to each assignment are individually assessed by your course tutor who will also offer guidance and feedback. For further details of the course contents please see the Certificate in Counselling module outline.

The course is designed for six months part time study, although students may spread their studies over a full year if they wish.
